Chapter Seventeen

Some sort of deal was taking place right in front of them. Ruby and Melody exchanged an excited and shocked look with each other, then went back to watching the scene. Melody’s heart leaped into her throat and thumped hard and quick. She was anxious to know what was going on, who was involved, and what was in that building. None of which she could answer, nor could she get an answer from her current position.

To think that the crime ring really existed and that it was operated by people she might know was astonishing and terrifying and maddening all at the same time.

The light overhead did nothing to reveal who was standing there talking, but it looked as if there were two people on the right side whose faces were shrouded. She couldn’t see if they had on masks, or if it was simply the horrible lighting that threw their faces into deep shadows.

The other person had his back to Ruby and Melody, but something in the stance was familiar to Melody.

One of the faceless individuals produced a small suitcase. The person with his back to Melody took the suitcase, nodded once, and walked off toward a car parked on the other side of the vans.

Ruby pushed Melody down as the two faceless people turned to get into the vans. They wore ski masks. Melody’s heart skipped a beat.

“I bet that case was full of money,” Melody whispered.

“Not much could fit in a suitcase that small that would warrant such shady, sketchy meetings. Drugs, money, and that’s about all I can think of right now.”

Melody nodded.

The vans moved out of the building and headed off in the other direction. As they were moving, Ruby took out her camera and started snapping shots off as quickly as she could.

Melody peeked out just in time to see the person who had accepted the case. It was a woman, not a man. And it was a woman she recognized. Angela Brick, Chief of Police. The chief opened a car door, looked around, which gave Melody another good look at her, and then got behind the wheel.

“That’s the Chief of Police, Ruby. That’s Angela Brick,” Melody said, eyes wide.

The car’s headlights popped on, flooding the floor of the building and the pavement just past the doors in a bright wash of light. Ruby gasped and lowered her head again.

“She was turning that way,” Ruby said, pointing to the left. “She’s not following the vans.”

The light washed through the trees under which Ruby had parked, and then it was dark again. The women poked their heads up and watched as the chief drove off into the darkness. The garage doors slid down until the building was again secure.

“What in the world did we just witness?” Melody asked.

“I don’t know, but it couldn’t have been anything good. If that case was full of money, Angela Brick just took some sort of payoff. Was it for services rendered?”

“Could have been a payoff to keep quiet about whatever’s going on with the crime ring.
